Formed over 70,000 years ago by a massive eruption of the Toba volcano, this caldera lake plays a crucial role in local coffee production. The lake's water helps form clouds, which bring rain, and then returns to the lake, maintaining a rich ecosystem through this continuous cycle. Simalem Farm Simalem Farm, located in the northwest region of Lake Toba, is a rare place where ancient primary forests remain intact. The owner, Eddy, grows not only coffee but also oranges and tea using organic farming methods to preserve the rich ecosystem. The farm is home to orangutans, and features a large composting facility that mixes livestock manure with coffee pulp and parchment to produce organic fertilizer, which is distributed to local farmers. Additionally, the farm hosts the Simalem Coffee Academy, a CQI-certified lab equipped with advanced facilities for culturing natural yeast from coffee cherries and researching fermentation processes.
